Maya
The Maya were some of the first documented inhabitants of the country of Honduras. Many native tribes lived in the country but the Maya proved to be one of the most advanced groups as they built magnificent buildings still to be seen in Honduras today. They colonized and resided on the western side of Honduras. The Maya never completely settled in Honduras as they moved their community northwest towards Guatemala and Belize.
Spain
While other small tribes established themselves in isolated areas of Honduras, the next major inhabitants of Honduras were the Spaniards. Christopher Columbus claimed his newfound territory for King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella in the early 16the century. A chief by the name of Lempira of the indigenous group Lenca led a rebellion against the Spanish rule. While many rallied behind him, his efforts were no match for the Spanish conquistadors.

Central American Federation
In 1821, Honduras, along with four other Central America countries, announced independence from Spain to form a federation with the other countries. This was a step in the right direction towards their eventual independence.

Independence
Seventeen years later, Honduras decided to become its own country and filed for independence from the Central American Federation. Though Honduras has been an independent country since 1838, the country still has not quite achieved much economic stability. From 1832 to 1932, the country was dealt with civil war as they lacked a stable government. The country made a progressive step towards growth as the Central Bank of Honduras was established in the middle of the twentieth century.
