These activities can be implemented all throughout the unit. It is up to you to decide which activities you want to utilize depending on how long you make the unit. Listed below are some activities you could use and in parentheses it lists why they are specific to Honduran culture.
Example Activities:
- Have students work in groups of 5 in everything they do. (In Honduras, students do everything together. They eat, take classes, and even spend the night at the school together.)
- Have the teacher teach a lesson that is trade-based. Give the students options and have them vote on what trade lesson they want to learn. Examples include classes on topics such as animals/livestock, planting/farming, agriculture, etc. (In Honduras, students will take classes such as the ones listed above as part of their curriculum.)
- Have students share textbooks and not use the internet/technology for the week. If you choose not to use technology, some of the lessons will have to be modified to not include technology. (Students in Honduras do not have the same technological luxuries we have in American classrooms. Having students not use iPads and other electronic devices will help students gain perspective on what life is life for students in Honduras.)
- Give each student a Honduran food recipe. Have them prepare the food and bring it to class to celebrate Dia del Nino, Children's Day.
- Have students make Operation Christmas Child boxes and send them to Honduras. (After the unit is complete, students should see how blessed they are after comparing their educational experience with the Honduran experience. School supplies that students may otherwise take for granted will be appreciated when packing Operation Christmas Child boxes.)
